Nailah Blackman
Nailah Blackman
Nailah Blackman has been at the very top of our wishlist for years, and now the moment has finally arrived: the princess of modern Soca is coming to tear up the stage!
When we say music is in her blood, we mean it literally. Nailah is the granddaughter of the legendary Garfield Blackman, better known as Ras Shorty I. Nicknamed 'The Father of Soca', he is the man who invented the 'Soul of Calypso'. That's right: Soca! He blended Calypso and the rhythms of Trinidad with Dominica's Cadence-lypso and Indian Chutney influences into the explosive sound we love so much.
With a mother who was a Calypso artist and an aunt cousin in Reggae music, there was no escaping it for Nailah: she was destined for the stage. But make no mistake, she charts her own course entirely. She effortlessly mixes those traditional Soca roots with Dancehall, Bouyon, and poppy vibes into a super-infectious whole.
Our favourites? 'Bad Gyal' with Patrice Roberts and, of course, the anthem 'More Sokah'. We can only agree: That's right, more sokah please!
